Wildcatters, Texas Independent Oilmen was written by Roger W Olien and Diana Davids Hinton. Published on May, 24th, 2007, this book relives the time in Texas during the 1970s and 1980s where a wildcatter was a recognizable figure in pop culture. While the role of a wildcatter since then has been less celebrated, it is none the less just as important. The original publishing of the book was in 1984 by the Texas Monthly Press.
While taking notes from mainly verbal histories, the story is told of the Independent Oilmen of West Texas and their business strategies in relations to local conditions coupled with regional and national concerns. With a strong focus on the Permian Basin and parts on New Mexico, this review of an over 60 year period of the oil industries glimmering presence of the American Oil Industry which at the time, produced roughly 1 fifth of the total US oil production. This story covers a great deal of technological change including government regulation and economic fluctuations with an emphasis on the oil and gas community.
This most recent version brings the story of the Texas Oilmen up to date in modern times by addressing additional career paths of the original famed wildcatters in their natural progression in addition to the role of the current independent oil and gas operators in the industry.
